Anytime you are in need of a lawyer to deal with automotive accidents, you may wish to start by talking with family and friends and see if they have any suggestions. Of course, it would be best to learn if the auto attorney they used was one they would recommend or if they have problems, such as calls not returned, slow at doing their work, or just plain ignore your own evidence.
When it comes to vehicle accidents there are all kinds of laws that the attorney will need to know that are both federal and state. Every state has their own laws and the attorney you choose should be up to date with all laws and regulations that pertain to the type of auto accident that caused your injuries.
You can easily find an accident lawyer online and via your telephone book, but this does not mean that just because they have a license to practice law in your state they are the one that will be best for you. You will need to find a qualified and experienced lawyer that has clients that have been in similar accidents. He or she should have your best interest at heart and treat you as if you were his or her only client. They also need to have great negotiation skills for when they are working with insurance companies and going to court. You should gather a list of attorneys from family, friends, and ads and from there start your interviews.
If you are in the hospital, it may be harder to find an attorney unless one of your family members can do the legwork or have the lawyer visit you at the hospital.
If you are talking with a law firm, be sure that you are actually speaking with the lawyer that will be working on your case. Some law firms often use a team but the one representing you may not be the one you are actually speaking with regarding your case. You should ask for references, years of experience, and if they have gone to court previously and the outcome of the court case.
Be sure that you learn if the attorney is representing both sides that were involved in the accident. This should never happen as it could be bad for both of you.
Check and see if you find your list of attorneys on the American Association for Justice or other associations that are related to law. Normally, attorney’s that are involved in these types of associations are up to date on the latest laws and regulations and can represent you better than ones that are not involved in any type of association.
Look online and see if you can find any reviews on the attorney you believe you may wish to use. You can just type the name of the law firm or lawyer in Google and their name or firm will come up and you can read as many reviews as possible so you can make an educated decision.
Learn about the attorney’s policies such as privacy between them and their clients as well as if they will do the work pro bono or if they will need a specific amount upfront before you sign the agreement. Most accident attorneys will do the work and only take a portion of your settlement at the end of the case. You can even ask to see their overall performance in court cases similar to yours so you can learn how many times they truly came through for their client.
Check with the local Bar Association to be sure that the lawyer you choose does not have any pending cases brought against him. You may find that the lawyer you have chosen has been in trouble for misconduct or even been disbarred.
Of course, above all else, you must choose a lawyer that makes you feel comfortable. Too many times, people choose an attorney that their gut feeling is that the attorney not up to par.
